East Central Railway (ECR)

The East Central Railway (ECR) is a vital regional zone of Indian Railways that serves the densely populated heartland of eastern India. Although first set up in September 1996, it became fully operational on October 1, 2002, by taking over select divisions from the Eastern Railway and North Eastern Railway zones. This zone was created to improve regional train management and support the rapid passenger and industrial growth of the area. The administrative headquarters of the East Central Railway is located in Hajipur, a historical city situated near the state capital of Patna in Bihar.

This railway zone covers a major geographic region spanning primarily across the entire state of Bihar and the coal-rich state of Jharkhand, along with small bordering parts of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh. To manage its heavy daily train traffic smoothly, the zone is organized into five main administrative units: Danapur, Dhanbad, Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya (formerly Mughalsarai), Samastipur, and Sonpur. Together, these divisions look after thousands of kilometers of tracks, major repair workshops, and hundreds of passenger stations. The zone handles a high volume of regional commuter services, long-distance routes, and international rail links to Nepal.

East Central Railway manages some of India's busiest railway junctions and terminals, including Patna Junction, Pandit Deen Dayal Upadhyaya Junction, Dhanbad Junction, Gaya Junction, and Muzaffarpur Junction. The zone operates high-priority long-distance passenger trains, such as the Patna Rajdhani Express, Sampoorna Kranti Express, and Shramjeevi Express. It carries millions of travelers and pilgrims every year to famous spiritual and historical centers, including the UNESCO World Heritage site of Bodh Gaya, the ancient ruins of Nalanda, the historic hills of Rajgir, and Patna Sahib. It also runs heavy festival special trains every year to help millions of workers and families travel home smoothly for Chhath Puja and Holi.
