Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR)

The Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) is a vital regional zone of Indian Railways created to keep the far eastern corner of the country connected. The rail history in this region started back in 1881 when the first train line opened in Assam to transport tea and goods. Originally, this territory was part of the North Eastern Railway zone. However, on January 15, 1958, a separate zone was formed to give special attention to the unique geography and transport needs of the northeastern area. The main administrative headquarters of the Northeast Frontier Railway is located at Maligaon in Guwahati, Assam.

This railway zone covers a massive geographic footprint across eight northeastern states—Assam, Arunachal Pradesh, Nagaland, Manipur, Mizoram, Meghalaya, Tripura, and Sikkim—along with parts of northern West Bengal and eastern Bihar. Because it operates along difficult hilly lands and heavy rainfall areas, managing this region requires careful daily planning. To handle operations smoothly, the zone is split into five main administrative divisions: Katihar, Alipurduar, Rangiya, Lumding, and Tinsukia. These units work together to maintain thousands of kilometers of tracks and hundreds of stations spread across forests, rivers, and mountains.

Northeast Frontier Railway connects remote border areas directly with distant Indian cities through major hubs like Guwahati, Dibrugarh, New Jalpaiguri, Silchar, and Agartala. It runs famous long-distance trains, including the Dibrugarh Rajdhani, North East Express, and the Dibrugarh–Kanyakumari Vivek Express, which is one of the longest train routes in the country. The zone is also world-famous for heritage and tourist travel. It manages the historic Darjeeling Himalayan Railway, a UNESCO World Heritage toy train route. Additionally, NFR runs special glass-roof Vistadome coaches that offer scenic views of lush green tea gardens, mountains, and wildlife sanctuaries to travelers.
