South Central Railway (SCR)
The South Central Railway (SCR) is one of the most prominent and high-performing zones of Indian Railways. It was officially formed on October 2, 1966, by combining parts of the Southern Railway and Central Railway networks to better serve the growing transportation needs of central and southern India. Over the years, its boundaries were reorganized to improve efficiency, such as in 2003 when the Guntakal division was brought into the zone. The main administrative headquarters of the South Central Railway is located at Rail Nilayam in Secunderabad, Telangana. Because Secunderabad and Hyderabad form a massive urban hub, this headquarters acts as a critical nerve center connecting passenger and goods transit across neighboring states.
This railway zone covers a huge territory spread primarily across Telangana, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra, while also serving small portions of Karnataka and Tamil Nadu. To manage its massive daily rail traffic smoothly, the zone is organized into six administrative divisions: Secunderabad, Hyderabad, Vijayawada, Guntakal, Guntur, and Nanded. Together, these divisions look after thousands of kilometers of railway lines, major loco sheds, and hundreds of stations. The zone operates everything from heavy-density freight lines and high-speed intercity routes to dense local suburban lines like the Multi-Modal Transport System (MMTS) in the Hyderabad-Secunderabad twin cities.
South Central Railway connects major industrial, commercial, and tourist centers directly with capital cities across India. Key stations under this zone include Secunderabad Junction, Hyderabad Deccan, Vijayawada, Tirupati, Nanded, and Kacheguda. The zone runs numerous high-priority express trains, including premium services like the Secunderabad–Visakhapatnam Vande Bharat, Telangana Express, Charminar Express, and Sabari Express. It also carries millions of pilgrims every year traveling to world-famous holy destinations, such as the Tirumala Venkateswara Temple through Tirupati, the Hazur Sahib Gurudwara in Nanded, and the historic shrines of Vijayawada and Bhadrachalam.
