South Coast Railway (SCoR)
The South Coast Railway (SCoR) is the newest zonal railway of Indian Railways, established to strengthen connectivity and administrative focus along the eastern sea border. Created to fulfill a long-standing regional demand following the reorganization of Andhra Pradesh, the central government officially notified the zone to begin full operations on June 1, 2026. The administrative headquarters of the South Coast Railway is located in the coastal port city of Visakhapatnam, Andhra Pradesh.
This railway zone primarily covers the coastal plains, inland agricultural districts, and industrial belts of Andhra Pradesh, alongside neighboring sections extending into Telangana, Karnataka, and Tamil Nadu. The zone operates across four main administrative divisions: Vijayawada, Guntakal, Guntur, and the newly carved Visakhapatnam division (formed from restructuring the historic Waltair division). Together, these divisions supervise thousands of kilometers of broad-gauge tracks, major locomotive maintenance sheds, and hundreds of passenger stations serving diverse regional terrains.
South Coast Railway manages critical passenger transit lines connecting southern and eastern India. Prominent stations under its network include Visakhapatnam, Vijayawada, Tirupati, Guntur, and Guntakal. The zone runs high-priority express services, including Vande Bharat, Jan Shatabdi, and long-distance intercity trains linking the region to major Indian metros. Millions of tourists, business travelers, and spiritual pilgrims use this network annually to reach world-famous destinations such as the Tirumala Venkateswara Temple in Tirupati, the Kanaka Durga Temple in Vijayawada, and the beaches of Visakhapatnam.
