South Eastern Railway (SER)

The South Eastern Railway (SER) is one of the most essential and profitable zones of Indian Railways. Its historical roots go back to the Bengal Nagpur Railway, which was created in the late nineteenth century to connect major trade and mining areas. When the Indian government reorganized the national rail network after independence, the South Eastern Railway was officially created on August 1, 1955, by separating it from the Eastern Railway zone. Its main administrative headquarters is located at Garden Reach in Kolkata, West Bengal. The headquarters complex is famous for its beautiful historic red-brick main building, built in 1909, which sits surrounded by green gardens near the Hooghly River.

This railway zone serves a major portion of eastern India, stretching across the states of West Bengal, Jharkhand, and Odisha. To run its daily train operations smoothly, the zone is divided into four main administrative units: the Kharagpur, Adra, Chakradharpur, and Ranchi divisions. Together, these divisions manage thousands of kilometers of tracks, major locomotive maintenance sheds, and hundreds of passenger stations. The zone also operates large repair workshops, including the historic Kharagpur workshop, which is one of the largest railway maintenance facilities in the entire country.

South Eastern Railway links major industrial cities directly with capital hubs and coastal regions. Important stations under this zone include Kharagpur, Ranchi, Tatanagar, Adra, Santragachi, and Shalimar. The zone runs many famous high-speed passenger trains, such as the Howrah-Ranchi Shatabdi Express, Steel Express, Coromandel Express, and Howrah-Puri Express. It also plays a key role in tourist travel by carrying millions of people every year to spiritual centers like Puri, historical sites like Konark, and scenic forest areas across Jharkhand and Odisha. In addition, its suburban network carries large numbers of local daily commuters into the Kolkata metropolitan area every day.
