South Western Railway (SWR)

The South Western Railway (SWR) is one of the key regional zones of Indian Railways, created to serve the fast-growing transport and industrial needs of South India. It was officially carved out as an independent railway zone on April 1, 2003, mainly by combining the Bangalore and Mysore divisions from the Southern Railway zone along with the reorganized Hubli division from the South Central Railway zone. The administrative headquarters of the South Western Railway is located in Hubballi (Hubli), Karnataka. Because it was formed in the early twenty-first century, this zone has focused heavily from its start on modernizing regional rail links and supporting the booming technology and manufacturing sectors of the region.

This railway zone covers a major portion of southwestern India, spanning almost the entire state of Karnataka, along with parts of neighboring Goa, Tamil Nadu, Andhra Pradesh, and Maharashtra. To handle its daily operations smoothly, the zone is organized into three main administrative divisions: Bengaluru, Mysuru (Mysore), and SSBS Hubballi. Together, these units look after thousands of kilometers of tracks, major locomotive maintenance sheds, and hundreds of passenger stations. The zone manages everything from heavy urban commuter traffic around Bengaluru to scenic mountain routes passing through dense forests and coastal regions.

South Western Railway operates some of South India's busiest passenger hubs, including KSR Bengaluru (Bangalore City), Yesvantpur, SSBS Hubballi, Mysuru Junction, and Vasco-da-Gama in Goa. The zone runs many high-priority passenger trains, including premium services like the KSR Bengaluru–New Delhi Rajdhani Express, Shatabdi Express, and multiple Vande Bharat trains connecting Bengaluru to neighboring state capitals. It also carries millions of tourists every year to world-famous heritage sites like Hampi (via Hosapete), the historic palaces of Mysuru, and the beaches of Goa. Additionally, the famous luxury tourist train Golden Chariot travels across many routes managed under this zone.
