Southern Railway (SR)

The Southern Railway (SR) holds a special place in Indian history as the very first zone created after the country's rail network was reorganized after independence. It was officially formed on April 14, 1951, by joining three historical rail companies: the Madras and Southern Mahratta Railway, the South Indian Railway, and the Mysore State Railway. Rail travel in this region goes back to July 1856, when South India’s first train ran between Royapuram and Wallajah Road in Tamil Nadu. Today, the zone's main administrative headquarters is located near Chennai Central in Chennai, Tamil Nadu.

The Southern Railway covers a massive territory across South India. Its network mainly spans the entire states of Tamil Nadu and Kerala, the Union Territory of Puducherry, and small bordering sections of Andhra Pradesh and Karnataka. To manage its vast network efficiently, the zone is divided into six administrative units: Chennai, Tiruchirappalli, Madurai, Salem, Palakkad, and Thiruvananthapuram. Together, these divisions maintain over 5,000 kilometers of tracks and operate hundreds of stations, managing everything from dense city networks to scenic coastal and mountain routes.

Southern Railway operates crucial rail links connecting major southern hubs with the rest of the nation. Important stations include Chennai Central, Chennai Egmore, Coimbatore Junction, Madurai Junction, Ernakulam, and Thiruvananthapuram Central. The zone runs many high-speed and long-distance passenger trains, including Rajdhani, Shatabdi, and Vande Bharat Express services. It carries millions of pilgrims every year to famous spiritual destinations such as Rameswaram, Madurai, Kanyakumari, Tiruvannamalai, and Sabarimala (via Kerala stations). Additionally, the zone operates the historic Nilgiri Mountain Railway toy train to Ooty, which is recognized as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
