Western Railway (WR)

The Western Railway (WR) is one of the busiest, most efficient, and historically rich zones of Indian Railways. It was officially formed on November 5, 1951, by merging several older rail networks, including the famous Bombay, Baroda and Central India Railway, along with regional state railways of Saurashtra, Rajputana, and Jaipur. The history of train travel in this region dates back to 1860, when the first railway line opened between Ankleshwar and Uttaran in Gujarat. Today, the administrative headquarters of the Western Railway zone is located in an iconic heritage building at Churchgate in Mumbai, Maharashtra.

This railway zone covers a vast area in western and central India, spanning mainly across the states of Gujarat, Rajasthan, Maharashtra, and parts of Madhya Pradesh. To ensure smooth daily operations across such a large territory, the zone is divided into six main administrative divisions: Mumbai Central, Vadodara, Ahmedabad, Ratlam, Rajkot, and Bhavnagar. Together, these divisions manage thousands of kilometers of rail tracks, major workshops like the one in Lower Parel, and hundreds of stations. The zone manages a mix of heavy urban suburban traffic, long-distance express lines, and industrial freight corridors.

Western Railway operates some of India's most prominent train terminals, including Mumbai Central, Bandra Terminus, Ahmedabad Junction, Vadodara Junction, and Surat. Its Mumbai Suburban Railway line—running from Churchgate to Dahanu Road—is a vital transport system that carries millions of daily city commuters. The zone also runs many high-priority passenger trains, including the Mumbai Central–New Delhi Rajdhani Express, August Kranti Rajdhani, Paschim Express, and multiple Vande Bharat Express services. Additionally, it connects travelers to major tourist and pilgrimage sites like the Somnath Temple, Dwarka, the Statue of Unity at Ekta Nagar, and the Gir National Park.
